N&T Throwdown - Gift Wrap Ensemble Challenge

Hi friends!  Can you believe it's already December?  We're kicking off our last Throwdown of the year, and it's aimed at helping you prepare for the holidays.

This month we're asking you to create a gift wrap ensemble.  There is an extra special prize involved (you'll have to read to the end to get to that), and we have a very special guest to get you inspired as well!

Happy December! I'm Rebecca Luminarias and I'm thrilled to be a guest for the Neat & Tangled Challenge this month! It's all about gift wrapping, which is my most favorite kind of paper craft!

I have some easy and fun projects for you today, beginning with stenciled gift bags. I used the Fa La La stencil from November's release as the main ingredient in almost all of my projects. I was going to use it in conjunction with plain white wrapping paper, but then I decided to stencil muslin bags instead and I love the results!

If you want to do it, too, you'll need a few things to get you started:

- Fa La La Simply Stencil (or any Neat & Tangled stencil!)
- Muslin bag (The main size I used was 4" x 6" but any size works.)
- Ink colors of your choice
- Blending tools
- Washi or painter's tape
*I'm using muslin bags, but this tutorial is good for any medium, from paper to fabric.

To begin, I placed my bag on a scrap piece of paper to protect my work surface. I used thick washi tape (about 2" wide) to tape the stencil in place over the bag. I wanted to vary the colors of the falalas so I used thinner tape to cover certain sections of the text. When I'm done applying the first layer of ink, I'll go back and apply a different color to the taped off sections.

With an ink blending tool, I filled in the stencils with pink ink. The bag is thicker than plain paper or cardstock so it moves around easier. You'll want to be careful of this and use your free hand to firmly hold it in place.

I lift the stencil up every so often to be sure it looks okay. Once the first color is finished, take a look for any missed sections (unintentional, of course!) and add a bit more color.

Before moving onto the second color application, you'll want to wipe the pink ink off of the stencil. I didn't want to move my bag so I folded a paper towel into quarters and placed it under the stencil to protect the bag. I wiped it clean with a baby wipe, and then dried it with another paper towel.

To apply the second coat of ink, I did it section by section, instead of covering the entire stencil with tape all at once. I used green ink as an accent to the pink. It didn't take too long at all to do it this way.

Once it was done, I removed the tape and stencil, and admired my colorful FaLaLa-lovely gift bag!

The best thing is that there are all kinds of variations you can do with the stencil--do the entire bag in one color, apply a different color to one whole row, alternate the rows with colors, or use an entire spectrum of hues for a rainbow of prettiness! For Christmas, I stayed with red, green, and pink, but I encourage you to experiment and have fun!

I used dye inks in bolder, more saturated tones for the bags because paler colors don't show up as well. You might try acrylic paints, as well.

I dressed up the bags with some trims, and even added some yarn pom poms, choosing trims that feel warm and cozy. I also tied on a couple of skinny tags from the Classic Tag 2 die set and I stamped "From Me to You," found in the Wishing You Love set. I then added a gold glittery foam alpha to each bag, which acts as a monogram for my recipient.

These gift bags are so convenient for giving small trinkets, gift cards, baked treats, and candles (or certain stamp and die sets for crafty friends!). I use them all the time for giving gifts and I'm so excited to use them with the Fa La La stencil this holiday season. Every year I make a set of cards and gift tags for my husband's side of the family and this year, they'll be housed in these.

Another fun item you can put inside of these bags is a handmade card. I made one with the Classic Tag 2 die and the Wishing You Love stamp set.

I liked the idea of creating a folded card from this large tag so I taped the die to a folded card with the top of the die set just above the fold in order to preserve it.

After running it through my die cutting machine, I had a folded card in the shape of a tag.

I then heat embossed the large sentiment on it with gold embossing powder--large messages like that are so nice for mass producing cards at Christmastime!

I embossed and die cut some of the small stars that come with the stamp set, too, arranging them in the white space around the sentiment. They are adhered with a 3-D foam dot to lift them off of the card.

The card needed just a bit more at the top so I used one of the accompanying dies from the Classic Tag 2 set to cut the mint gingham top piece. After adhering that to the card, I ran bits of lace, seam binding, and fuzzy yarn through the hole in the tag and tied them in place with some gold thread.

The card fits perfectly inside the 4" x 6" gift bag and the bag is a nice way to deliver handmade greetings like the card. If you're giving money or gift cards, it's also a great way to keep it safe and it's a little more personal and meaningful when it's being given in this manner.

Speaking of gift cards, I have one more thing to show you before I let you go to get creative. The best part is, you can use all 3 of these ideas together to create a 3-piece gift ensemble!

Gift cards are practical, easy, and often much appreciated presents during the hectic holidays. I always love to come up with fun ways to hold them, and I used the Fa La La stencil and the Classic Tag 1 to help me out with that part. I got the tag die with the intention of making an actual tag with it, but when I took it out of the packaging, it suddenly screamed 'gift card holder' at me and I had to oblige!

I cut out two tags and used the stencil to decorate one of them. I only wanted to cover a certain portion with the stencil so I taped off the outer edges to avoid applying color there.

Next, I stitched the 2 tags together, back to back, using a gift card as a guide--it wouldn't be very good if I'd gotten all done and the card didn't actually fit, right? I'm a hand-stitcher so I paper-pierced and sewed that way, but it'll be a lot quicker if you machine-stitch the tags together.

When I was finished sewing, I slipped the gift card inside and added my requisite trims, which were a pom pom, red seam binding, and pink fuzzy yarn. I added a glitter 'A' as the final step and I've got another gift in the books!

I hope you are challenged to create some fun (and easy!) gift wrap this year. It's my favorite time of year for wrapping presents and adding handmade touches to all of them. The Fa La La stenciled gift bags will become a permanent fixture in my holiday wrapping-repertoire, how about yours?
Thanks so much to Rebecca for her fantastic sample ensemble!  Now for the challenge details:

1) Create a gift wrap ensemble that includes at least THREE different elements, and submit it through the Inlinkz tool below. When linking, please link to the specific blog post, not your entire blog.
2) Link back to the challenge blog and display the challenge graphic in your post.
3) Neat & Tangled products must be the focal point of your project. You can use products from other companies, but Neat & Tangled products should be the star.
4) You may enter as many times as you would like.
5) You have until Thursday, December 27th at 11:59 EST to enter
6) Winner will not be chosen at random, but rather will be judged based on creativity and execution.

Mixed Media Cards in Bulk | VIDEO | Natalie Elphinstone

Every year at about this time I vow to myself that I'm not going to leave my Christmas crafting until the last minute and that I'll get organised early. I often make these starts with really good intentions... what eventuates is another story!

Certainly what I do know is that if I want to get ahead I need to be making 'batches' of cards rather than single detailed projects. Bonus points if it's quick and easy, messy and fun, and looks unique when it's done!

So this week I started playing around with some mixed-media techniques with the Neat and Tangled Radiating Star stencil. This detailed stencil makes a great background that steals the show without needing to add much else to finish it off.

Mixed media techniques really lend themselves well to experimentation and I dove headfirst into this project without clear goals in mind. I simply wanted to try a few things out and see what the results might be. I discovered that using different mediums create vastly different results, for example the pastel version here uses Gesso as a base, whilst the darker coloured ones use Texture Paste.

My video takes you through the whole process of creating these cards, and it's really a 'warts and all' view. I wanted to keep this as 'real life' as possible and I've kept in all the experiments-gone-wrong, all the mistakes and all the victories as well. I hope it inspires you and maybe encourages you to try something new today!

Stacked Die Cuts | VIDEO | Natalie Elphinstone

I have to admit I love a good challenge! And crafting challenges always push me to try new things and get more creative with what I already have on hand. When I feel like my mojo is slumping I'll look for a challenge to take part in, or even make one up for myself!

So for today's post I decided to challenge myself to make a project using only my Neat and Tangled dies, without any stamps! Now I didn't quite get there because in the end I couldn't resist the temptation to add a sentiment and a little finishing touch of Christmas lights, but my intentions were good! And you can see that I could have easily left those bits out, or replaced them with something else instead so I didn't feel like a failure! LOL!

In my usual style though I like to add lots of paper layers, and I like to stack them up and overlap them and cluster them together. I like to add a variety of different colours, and I'm always looking for an excuse to use up my patterned paper, and to throw in some glitter. I wanted to make sure I stuck to my usual style and include all these elements, even within the confines of my self-imposed challenge to only use die cuts. And so it began!

Do you think it's too early to begin Christmas projects yet? I hear there's only 90 odd days left before it's upon us, so I figure I'll take any crafting opportunity I can to get a head start on my gift tags ;-)

In my video today I'm going to show you how these tags came together. They were quite easy to assemble, and without any real stamping and colouring they were super quick too! I'll share all my hints and tips along the way for creating your own versions of these stacked die-cut tags.

Floral Mixed Media Tags | VIDEO | Natalie Elphinstone

Hi friends, it's Natalie here today and I wanted to share some of my favourite mixed media techniques with you to create these bold and vibrant layered tags.

I think sometimes as card makers we hear the term 'mixed media' and think it's for those arty folks who like to get messy with abstract painting and collage glue and all sorts of unfamiliar colouring mediums! But mixed media just means using a variety of different mediums or materials on the same project which means it's definitely achievable with the Neat and Tangled products you already have in your stash and a few of your standard cardmaking supplies.

Think about it.... if you create a card using an ink-blended background, a watercoloured image and finish it off with a sprinkling of sequins then that's mixed media! You might have been doing it for years, but just haven't called it by that name. And it can be as messy and abstract as you would like, or you can keep it clean and simple with a more graphic appeal.

In my video today I'm going to share all the techniques I used to create these tags, along with a few tricks and secrets along the way. I hope maybe I can teach you something new, or remind you to pull out some forgotten mediums. But most of all I hope to show you how easy it can be!

Happy Happy Cardmaking with Keeway

Hi there! It's Keeway joining with you today in a happy, happy cardmaking session to make a fun birthday card! If there's any card I send out the most, it's birthday cards, so I definitely like to keep the stocked at all times. In our recent April Release, these adorable elephants in the Mommy, Daddy, and Me set, are not only great for your mother's and father's day cards, but can easily be transformed for any other occasion. Today, I'll be using them to create a fun birthday card.

I always start by stamping my images in hybrid ink (copic friendly) and coloring them up with copic markers. Then, I die cut them with the coordinating dies and set them aside. My elephants are from the Mommy, Daddy, and Me set, and the balloon came frrom the Little Monster set.
For my background, I wanted to create a celebratory feel, so what better than to fill it up with balloons! I used the Balloon Duo Simply Stencils to create this balloon filled background by blending on Tattered Rose, Worn Lipstick, Picked Raspberry, and Seedless Preserves distress oxide inks. With some masking using post-it tape, I also blended Hickory Smoke for the ground.
I die cut the background out of an A2-sized frame.
Then, I grabbed a birthday sentiment from the So Many Sentiments stamp set and heat embossed it in white onto black cardstock. I used the fishtail die from the Classic Tag 2 die set to die cut the sentiment out. Finally, I adhered all the various pieces to the blended background with foam tape. All done! Have a happy, happy day!

Spinner Tags | VIDEO | with Natalie Elphinstone

Today I'm back again with another fun twist (pun intended!) on creating some interactive tags that are perfect for a kid's birthday party. Last month I brought you shaker tags, this month I'm doing spinner tags!

The centrepiece of each one is a cute coloured image that is suspended in a little window cut into the tag. That allows him to spin around as though he's doing a little happy dance! I tell you, Judah has not stopped playing with these since I made them so I can vouch that the kids will love them!

I made four different examples to show you today, each with it's own little variation, because I guess I couldn't stop playing with this idea either! And I wanted to show you how you can make this work for various size little creatures.

I started off by making the tag with the dog. He's from Puppy's Favourite Things stamp set and I just love that you can choose from a number of different objects to tuck into his paws. This time I went with the cupcake. I also made a little party hat for him, but when I popped it on his head he was too big to spin around in the circle frame I'd cut, so it became a decoration over the sentiment instead.

Next I made the turtle tag, this time knowing his party hat would have plenty of room! However, what I didn't originally appreciate is that the turtle (unlike the other images I chose) is a bit unbalanced. Meaning, his largest area is his shell and birthday cake, but that doesn't run up the centre of the image, and so if I were to adhere the spinner string here he might just keep toppling over. But the solution was simple - I just stuck him onto a smaller disc of cardstock and strung this up instead. Now it spins perfectly!

Next up was the monkey tag. Both the monkey and the turtle are from the Wild Ones stamp set. The monkey is carrying a balloon which makes him quite a tall image, so instead of cutting a circle window I cut an oval one so he would fit. And since this didn't leave me any room on the tag for a sentiment, I stamped it directly onto the balloon instead!

And lastly there's that cute little monster from the latest release stamp set aptly called Little Monster! In my video today I'll show you how I made this one from start to finish so that you can go ahead and make your own versions! I'll also share my solutions for what to do with the back of the image since you're obviously going to see that when it spins around ;-)

Supplies:
Classic Tags 2 Die Set
Little Monster Stamp Set
Little Monster Nice and Neat Dies
Puppy's Favourite Things Stamp Set
Puppy's Favourite Things Nice and Neat Dies

I hope you'll give this technique a try. It's quite easy, and so much fun!

Neat & Tangled Throwdown - Party Ensemble Challenge

Happy Monday friends!  We're really excited about today's post!  For the last several years we hosted a bi-weekly and then monthly challenge called Little Tangles.  Although we elected to discontinue that this year, we still wanted to host periodic challenges because we love to see what you guys create using Neat & Tangled.

These quarterly challenges will be be more complex and bigger, and by bigger we are also referring to the prizes!

Our first challenge is a Party Ensemble challenge, and our resident party expert Elena prepared the cutest sample ensemble for you today:

Hi there!

I'm thrilled to share some ideas for decorations for your next dinosaur party:

prehistoric party

I used the images from Prehistoric to create the party ensemble. I have to admit that this is still one of my favorite sets!
prehistoric party

The little boy riding his dino would be perfect for a little boy's birthday party or a boy's baby shower. I colored all of the dinosaurs a fun blue and cut cupcake wrappers to match.

prehistoric party

There is candy inside these fabric favor bags, and I used the tiniest dinosaur on a flag die-cut (from Classic Tag 2) to add that pop of blue that was being carried throughout the decor.

prehistoric party

The mammoths are definitely not blue (but so cute!) so I added striped straws, and the tiny dinosaur again on the drink bottle labels.

prehistoric party

Before adhering the mammoth and his dino buddy, I took a navy copic marker's highlighter edge and drew a stripe at the bottom of each wrap-around-label.

Last, but not least, I created a table sign using the new Square and Chevrons cover-plate. I love this die! I opted to cut it out of a blue cardstock, and then used different blue markers to color the different pieces before putting them all back together. The "RAWR" - cut using the journaling alphas - stood out in their bright white.

I hope you like what I've created!

Isn't that ensemble the cutest?  Now it's your turn!  We want to see your take on the challenge!

Here are the details:

1) Create a party ensemble that includes at least THREE different party elements, and submit it through the Inlinkz tool below. When linking, please link to the specific blog post, not your entire blog.
