N&T Throwdown - Gift Wrap Ensemble Challenge

Hi friends!  Can you believe it's already December?  We're kicking off our last Throwdown of the year, and it's aimed at helping you prepare for the holidays.

This month we're asking you to create a gift wrap ensemble.  There is an extra special prize involved (you'll have to read to the end to get to that), and we have a very special guest to get you inspired as well!

Happy December! I'm Rebecca Luminarias and I'm thrilled to be a guest for the Neat & Tangled Challenge this month! It's all about gift wrapping, which is my most favorite kind of paper craft!

I have some easy and fun projects for you today, beginning with stenciled gift bags. I used the Fa La La stencil from November's release as the main ingredient in almost all of my projects. I was going to use it in conjunction with plain white wrapping paper, but then I decided to stencil muslin bags instead and I love the results!

If you want to do it, too, you'll need a few things to get you started:

- Fa La La Simply Stencil (or any Neat & Tangled stencil!)
- Muslin bag (The main size I used was 4" x 6" but any size works.)
- Ink colors of your choice
- Blending tools
- Washi or painter's tape
*I'm using muslin bags, but this tutorial is good for any medium, from paper to fabric.

To begin, I placed my bag on a scrap piece of paper to protect my work surface. I used thick washi tape (about 2" wide) to tape the stencil in place over the bag. I wanted to vary the colors of the falalas so I used thinner tape to cover certain sections of the text. When I'm done applying the first layer of ink, I'll go back and apply a different color to the taped off sections.

With an ink blending tool, I filled in the stencils with pink ink. The bag is thicker than plain paper or cardstock so it moves around easier. You'll want to be careful of this and use your free hand to firmly hold it in place.

I lift the stencil up every so often to be sure it looks okay. Once the first color is finished, take a look for any missed sections (unintentional, of course!) and add a bit more color.

Before moving onto the second color application, you'll want to wipe the pink ink off of the stencil. I didn't want to move my bag so I folded a paper towel into quarters and placed it under the stencil to protect the bag. I wiped it clean with a baby wipe, and then dried it with another paper towel.

To apply the second coat of ink, I did it section by section, instead of covering the entire stencil with tape all at once. I used green ink as an accent to the pink. It didn't take too long at all to do it this way.

Once it was done, I removed the tape and stencil, and admired my colorful FaLaLa-lovely gift bag!

The best thing is that there are all kinds of variations you can do with the stencil--do the entire bag in one color, apply a different color to one whole row, alternate the rows with colors, or use an entire spectrum of hues for a rainbow of prettiness! For Christmas, I stayed with red, green, and pink, but I encourage you to experiment and have fun!

I used dye inks in bolder, more saturated tones for the bags because paler colors don't show up as well. You might try acrylic paints, as well.

I dressed up the bags with some trims, and even added some yarn pom poms, choosing trims that feel warm and cozy. I also tied on a couple of skinny tags from the Classic Tag 2 die set and I stamped "From Me to You," found in the Wishing You Love set. I then added a gold glittery foam alpha to each bag, which acts as a monogram for my recipient.

These gift bags are so convenient for giving small trinkets, gift cards, baked treats, and candles (or certain stamp and die sets for crafty friends!). I use them all the time for giving gifts and I'm so excited to use them with the Fa La La stencil this holiday season. Every year I make a set of cards and gift tags for my husband's side of the family and this year, they'll be housed in these.

Another fun item you can put inside of these bags is a handmade card. I made one with the Classic Tag 2 die and the Wishing You Love stamp set.

I liked the idea of creating a folded card from this large tag so I taped the die to a folded card with the top of the die set just above the fold in order to preserve it.

After running it through my die cutting machine, I had a folded card in the shape of a tag.

I then heat embossed the large sentiment on it with gold embossing powder--large messages like that are so nice for mass producing cards at Christmastime!

I embossed and die cut some of the small stars that come with the stamp set, too, arranging them in the white space around the sentiment. They are adhered with a 3-D foam dot to lift them off of the card.

The card needed just a bit more at the top so I used one of the accompanying dies from the Classic Tag 2 set to cut the mint gingham top piece. After adhering that to the card, I ran bits of lace, seam binding, and fuzzy yarn through the hole in the tag and tied them in place with some gold thread.

The card fits perfectly inside the 4" x 6" gift bag and the bag is a nice way to deliver handmade greetings like the card. If you're giving money or gift cards, it's also a great way to keep it safe and it's a little more personal and meaningful when it's being given in this manner.

Speaking of gift cards, I have one more thing to show you before I let you go to get creative. The best part is, you can use all 3 of these ideas together to create a 3-piece gift ensemble!

Gift cards are practical, easy, and often much appreciated presents during the hectic holidays. I always love to come up with fun ways to hold them, and I used the Fa La La stencil and the Classic Tag 1 to help me out with that part. I got the tag die with the intention of making an actual tag with it, but when I took it out of the packaging, it suddenly screamed 'gift card holder' at me and I had to oblige!

I cut out two tags and used the stencil to decorate one of them. I only wanted to cover a certain portion with the stencil so I taped off the outer edges to avoid applying color there.

Next, I stitched the 2 tags together, back to back, using a gift card as a guide--it wouldn't be very good if I'd gotten all done and the card didn't actually fit, right? I'm a hand-stitcher so I paper-pierced and sewed that way, but it'll be a lot quicker if you machine-stitch the tags together.

When I was finished sewing, I slipped the gift card inside and added my requisite trims, which were a pom pom, red seam binding, and pink fuzzy yarn. I added a glitter 'A' as the final step and I've got another gift in the books!

I hope you are challenged to create some fun (and easy!) gift wrap this year. It's my favorite time of year for wrapping presents and adding handmade touches to all of them. The Fa La La stenciled gift bags will become a permanent fixture in my holiday wrapping-repertoire, how about yours?
Thanks so much to Rebecca for her fantastic sample ensemble!  Now for the challenge details:

Introducing our October Guest Designer - Ardyth Percy-Robb

We are so pleased to welcome Ardyth Percy-Robb as this month's guest designer at Neat & Tangled.  Ardyth has a wonderful bold, CAS style.  Ardyth's designs are eye-catching and approachable - she's a wonderful educator - her videos make recreating her pieces easy to achieve!  We love seeing her use our products and are so excited to share her work with you this month.  Here's a little more about her:

I live in Toronto, Canada, with my husband and 2 teenaged children. I started cardmaking in 2006, at a Stampin' Up! Party and have never looked back. I created my blog, MASKerade in 2012 to share my work and become part of this amazing community! I am active in the stamping community and work on various Design Teams and Challenge blogs.

I love clean, graphic design with bold colours and lots of white space. My favourite cards are the ones where stamps are used in unexpected ways to create something fun!

I'm thrilled to be a Guest Designer at Neat & Tangled this month - I hope you will be inspired by something you see in my posts!

Today is my first post and I decided to make a warm, autumn thank you card using this beautiful Maple Thanks stamp (and matching dies!)

I started by stamping the leaf twice on a panel of white cardstock, using Copic-friendly black ink. I coloured the leaves with 5 colours, making sure to get a good mix over each leaf. Then, I put the panel back into my MISTI and restamped the leaves with Versafine Clair Nocturne ink before embossing them with clear embossing powder. This gives these leaves a stained glass look. I coated them lightly with Diamond stickles for some sparkle and set them aside to dry.

I cut a tag using the Classic Tag 1 die and stamped a bold thanks sentiment from the Medallion Flower Builder set with a light gray ink for a tone-on-tone look. I used the grid on my Mini MISTI to help me move the tag so that my stamping was precise.  I used another sentiment from So Many Sentiments to complete the thought, and stamped it along the edge of the tag with dark brown ink.

I placed the die on each end of my panel and cut about half of each leaf. This allowed me to get a square die under the cut edges of the leaves to trim the panel to fit onto my 4.25x4.25 inch square card. If partial die-cutting isn't your thing, you could get a similar look by fully die-cutting the leaves and adhering them to  a full square white panel. I glued my panel directly to the card base, but popped up the edges of the leaves for some dimension. The tips of the leaves hang over the edge of the card, but it will still fit into a standard A2 envelope for mailing.

I used foam tape to pop up the tag in the centre of my card and added some more glitter glue along the scored lines in the tag.

Christmas baking with Elena

Hi there!

We just wrapped up our annual Christmas cookie exchange party, and I did a ton of baking. I love everything about holiday flavors and smells! This card will be the perfect companion to a tin of cookies for our neighbors.

I used images from Holiday Baking to create the scene - the little mouse handing off a carton of milk is my favorite.

Because the images are small, but I wanted them to take center stage without the bigger bear and bunny found in the set, I placed them onto our Classic Tag 1 shape.

I'm not sure if the card could scream Christmas any more than it does: the red milk carton, the green holly leaves and cake plate, the candy cane striped paper, and the knit green paper on the card-base (that last one is by Lawn Fawn. The lettered patterned paper is by Pinkfresh.)

If you love holiday baking as much as I do, you could give these cookies a try - I made almost 12 dozen of them this past weekend and they are yummy: white chocolate chai snickerdoodles. The only change I made to the recipe was to add some cinnamon to the cookie dough.

Swirly Twirly Stencil Waves Background

Hi there! It's Cheiron here with my monthly post. This week I am sharing a card with an adorable elephant from the Beach Day set on a background of "waves" made with the Swirly Twirly stencil. This background is super easy to make using a mono print technique with Distress Oxides and stencils.

To begin, I took my stencil and Distress Oxides in Peacock Feathers, Cracked Pistachio and Salty Ocean.

Then I pressed the inks into the stencil with the Distress Oxides, I find it easiest to apply a little twist while pressing them down so the ink comes out of the pad easier.

Once my inks were on the stencil, I gave them a few spritzes of water, until I could see it beading up on the back of the stencil. When the stencil was inked up and sprayed with water, I turned it over and pressed it down onto a panel of watercolor card stock to make a monoprint. I placed a paper towel over it to blot any excess and then removed the paper towel and stencil.

I love the look of this background, and think it looks just like waves! I hope you will try it out for yourself :)

Donut Mind....

Happy Friday!  Sadly we are saying goodbye to this month's Guest Designer Stephanie Klauck today.  She's given us the sweetest eye candy on Fridays this month and today's post is no exception.  Check it out:

Hi everyone, it's Stephanie here with my last card to share as the January guest designer. I have had so much fun sharing my cards this month... thank you so much for all of the sweet comments!

For my card today I used the Say Yes to Donuts stamp set and the Classic Tag and created a fun card design with some of the images from the stamp set. I stamped, coloured and cut out the girl in the donut and the other girl who is meant to peek over the donut.

I diecut the tag from white cardstock and added some blue colour to the background with distress ink and then I stamped the sentiment with black ink. Once I had the sentiment stamped, I adhered the girl in the donut to the center of the tag and then I added the tag to a grey card base with a strip of black and white patterned paper under it.

And then rather than having the second girl image peek over the donut, I put her at the top of the tag and weaved the twine from the tag through her arms so it looks like she's holding it.

I love how cute it looks with her up on the top of the tag.

Thank you for joining me on the Neat and Tangled blog today!

November Guest Designer Nichol Spohr - Holiday Ensemble

Today we're bidding farewell to our November Guest Designer, Nichol Spohr.  Nichol went all out this week with a full up holiday ensemble, we're in love!

Here's Nichol to tell you all about it:

Scene cards are always a favorite of mine. One of my favorite things to do is to mix and match images from multiple stamp sets (and dies) to create truly unique scenes.

I paired images from the new Santa’s Wonderland with the large deer from Into The Woods, the little bird from Lumberjack Love, and greetings from Happy Holidays (stamps and dies). I built the scene on the largest Scalloped die and popped up the die cut greeting with foam for subtle dimension.

While I was stamping all the images for my card I went ahead and stamped a second set to create some coordinating gift tags with the Classic Tag 1 die.

And what card is complete without a matching envelope?

I stamped this beautiful Christmas red envelope with the Please Deliver stamps and the Into The Woods deer and Santa’s Wonderland North Pole sign before embossing with white embossing powder.

I’ve loved guesting with Neat & Tangled this past month! It’s been an honor to play with stamps and dies that I love so much! Happy crafting friends!

Thanks so much to Nichol for being our guest this month!

Our November guest design, Nichol Spohr, is back with us today with some adorable holiday tags.  Here she is:

I love creating gift tags for the holidays and the Neat & Tangled Classic Tag 1 is the perfect base for any design! I used the brand new Elfs and Their Shelf stamps and dies to create cute gift tags perfect for the holiday season.

Happily, Nichol created another video for us this week to walk us through the process:

So cute!  Be sure to come back next week, to see another great project from Nichol!

Reindeer games.

Hi there!

Elena here, with a fun little card featuring the snowman-making reindeer from Santa's Wonderland.

The poor little reindeer is concentrating so hard on building his snowman that he doesn't notice what is coming his way. ha!

I built my scene onto a tag (the Classic Tag 1 die.) The patterned paper I used on the tag looks like falling snow, and helps all of the whites (like the snow ball and the mounds of snowballs) really pop.

The images are grounded with a bit of pom-pom trim.

The graphic background paper is so fun, and perfect for a card featuring the freezing temperatures of the north pole!

I hope you like my card, and thanks for stopping by!

♥.

Happier than...

Hi ya!  It's Amy here with a card that was so much fun to make!  I managed to add six Neat & Tangled products, do you spy them?  I'll start on the bottom and make my way to the top!

First of all, I'm smitten with plaid and I'm not afraid to mix 'n match.  I created my bottom panel using the Scalloped die set.  The Classic Tag 1 is a must have.  Its a great versatile design.  I actually made mine a smidge longer but just diecutting another couple inches of the bottom of the tag and adhering the pieces together.  The box Nice and Neat die is so much fun and super easily to put together!  Kitty's Favorite Things is adorable, don't you agree?  Surprise!  She's holding the Santa mug from the Beary Merry set!

I'm a big fan of my Zig Clean Color Markers...that's how I colored the Kitty and the mug.  Check out the interior of the card:

The new Happier Than set always has me chuckling....
