Watercolor Skies, Day and Night with Kelly Latevola

Hello Crafters! 

I hope you guys have been having an amazing week! The weather here has been in the 80's with blue 

skies and it's like Summer has arrived. Whoo hoo! 

I have two cards for you today that are the same but different. 

You guys know I love a scene card. A good scene can completely change the entire look or
feel of a stamp. Today I decided to use the same stamp set and layout to create two sky scenes. 
One during the day and one at night. 

For our blue skies and clouds card I started by wetting my entire piece of watercolor cardstock. I started with a much bigger piece than I needed so that way I can pick which area came out the best and trim that portion down for my card base. 

I started adding in some blues slowly letting them bloom into the water. Once I dropped the color in I didn't manipulate it too much more. I find I like my result much better when I let the water do the work. 

I left lots of white spaces to act as clouds in the sky. I think clouds offer a much more interesting blue sky. I continued adding in blue and eventually a little bit of purple until I was happy with the intensity. Remember watercolors dry back lighter than how they look when they are wet. 

To complete the scene I added in a few greens and teals at the bottom to act as very loose tree tops as our goose and fairy fly by. 

For the night scene I also covered my entire watercolor paper in water but I added color everywhere. Sounds lovely doesn't it? :) I laid down pinks, purples and blues but your night sky can be any colors you want. This is our base layer of color. We're going to paint right over it bur don't worry you'll still be able to see some of the colors. Yep, paint that black right over it. I did one layer but you can add as many layers as you like for a more opaque look. 

The part that makes the magic happen is the stars. I used white acrylic paint but a more traditional watercolor medium is gouache. Use whichever you're more comforatable with. I use a stiff bristle brush to spatter my paint and press it against the side of an acrylic block or my finger in this case because I couldn't find a block. 

I used the paint in varying consistencies for different brightness levels. The straight paint spattered off the brush is by far the whitest. 

Both images were colored in copic markers and die cut with their matching dies. They were colored in the same colored scheme but slightly differently to reflect their enviornment.
